- Attrition has been steady
- through two flocks now
- infighting with nightly visits from raccoons–
- egg laying becomes sporadic.
-
- I persevere
- but this time the rats come
- & a young red–tailed hawk–now
- I run a boarding house, fresh kill included.
-
- Soon I am down to one
- disconsolate, mourning, silent hen
- brooding over a cold marble egg,
- I rake up feathers, bury a foot.
-
- That Sicilian Buttercup–
- always distant, hard to catch–
- stays by my side all afternoon.
