“Keep Them Happy,” Said  Minnie Rose Lovgreen

for Nancy

Attrition has been steady
through two flocks now
infighting with nightly visits from raccoons–
egg laying becomes sporadic.

I persevere
but this time the rats come
& a young red–tailed hawk–now
I run a boarding house, fresh kill included.

Soon I am down to one
disconsolate, mourning, silent hen
brooding over a cold marble egg,
I rake up feathers, bury a foot.

That Sicilian Buttercup–
always distant, hard to catch–
stays by my side all afternoon.
